DIGITAL ARRESTS/FEDEX- COURIER FRAUDS

As already mentioned above that the Aadhar, phone numbers, social media and other data of citizens is available with the cyber criminals, they carefully choose their victims after analysing their social, financial and vulnerability, Fraudsters impersonating FEDEX COURIER EMPLOYEES to lure the victims into transferring money.


After having done background analysis as above, Fraudsters claiming to be from FedEx customer service. The scammer informs the unsuspecting caller that a package linked to their Aadhaar number has been seized by the Mumbai/New Delhi customs department as it contained illegal items like narcotics and banned drugs, a large consignment of SIMs etc.


While the victim is in shock to hear this news, the fake FedEx representative transfers the call to an alleged senior officer of the Mumbai/Delhi Police Cyber Cell or CBI. Then, victim goes into psychological trauma as the fraudsters reveal his Aadhar number, phone number and other details of him, meantime, he receives a video call from an individual posing as a police officer, who demands sensitive information like Aadhaar details and PAN card number for verification and even scared victims that it’s a serious crime and they will be landed in jail for years of their data matches with the courier consignment details.


To trick and terrifying the victims, the scammers use studios to replicate police stations or government offices. They also wear uniforms similar to those of police officers. And also, they even send fake arrest warrants of CBI and state police to victims.  


At this time, they use psychological tactics of keeping him in continuous mental pressure until he transfers the money into their accounts under the false promises of returning their money if they are proved innocents. Once it is done, the fraudsters disappear. 


Now a days, in majority of theses cases, the victims are "digitally arrested", where they are forced to stay visible over video calls with the fake police officer until the money is transferred. The whole operation is done in mostly in an hour or so in a meticulous way.

     
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

  1. No police officer appears over video call and ask for your identity and other details. If anybody claiming to be a police officer in Khaki Uniform of CBI or Cyber Crime Cell, he is fake as these two departments officers work in civil clothes except attending court or meeting senior officers.
     

  2. If a call raises suspicions, individuals should end the call immediately without engaging further. Scammers can employ psychological tactics to manipulate emotions and decision-making.
     

  3. Never deposit the money to the accounts given by fake police as police never asks anybody to deposit money.
     

  4. Whenever receives these calls, you must verify the status of any package directly on the official FedEx website. Avoid clicking on links received via SMS or email or WhatsApp, as scammers often use these avenues to manipulate victims.
